It feels good to know when authors request you to review their works. When Maitabi pinged me, I agreed readily. I know she is a fabulous writer, having reviewed her Aashi not long ago.
This, in no way, will affect my neutrality.
Plot
Mili and Julie Sharma are twins, raised in a conservative family. However, the love stories of the girls do not follow the rosy path.
Who is to blame for the double fiasco?
Is it all okay between the sisters who loved?
Review
The language is breezy, and the author has kept the use of vernacular words to the minimum. I liked the fact that the plot is not overtly convoluted and things happen at the right pace. The narrative takes place in the present, with the occasional jump in timelines that allow the readers to have a glimpse of the girls’ lives in the past.
While reading the novel, I had an inkling of who would deal the final blow. However, when I reached the scene, I felt a sense of emptiness. The reader and reviewer in me were happy with the character arc of a sister, but the human in me took time to catch my breath and sympathise with the victim.
There are very few major characters, making it easy for the readers to remember. The secondary ones are good value additions. However, I felt the plot a tad rushed towards the end. The comeuppance comes at a cost, but the reveal and the push towards it could have been a bit more gradual.
Having said that, I am aware (yet again) of the pressures of the publishing industry and their attempts to maintain a balance between affordability and profits. So I won’t blame anyone here.
I wish I could add more about the novel, but I don’t want to give out any spoilers.
Overall, Daughters Who Loved is an enjoyable read, and there’s no doubt about Maitabi Banerjee’s prowess as a writer.

Yeah! I experienced the same void that you talked about! Good analysis.
